080: Slap Shot (1977)

Title: Slap Shot (1977)
Starring: Paul Newman, Jeff Carlson, Steve Carlson
Directed By: George Roy Hill

It's one of the greatest sports movies of all-time featuring some of the most memorable characters to come out of the 70's (The Hanson Brothers). It's definitely not a hit 'em hard hockey biopic, but what it lacks in accuracy toward the sport it more than makes up for in laughs. One of my favorite Paul Newman pictures.

Recommended.

Score: 7.5/10

  1. It actually is a perfect representation of what being a part of a minor hockey league team is like. The screenwriter had her brother record actual locker room conversations for source material in addition to other stories he told her.

It also shows what kind of violence and goonery existed in the sport (and NHL) at the time in the 1970s, because bench-clearers really did happen back then. I think the only think that comes even remotely close to that is the rivalry Detroit and Colorado had in the mid-90s to the early-00s. The Philadelphia Flyer's were the toughest team back then, earning them the name the Broadstreet Bullies.

It is a bit far-fetched, but Reg's speech about hockey players being actors, punks, and goons isn't too far off. Do yourself a favor and AVOID the second part that came out years ago. It's HORRIBLE and not worth watching in my opinion.
