Jan 2-8: 2010 Movies

Dates: Jan 2-8, 2011
Theme: 2010 Movies
Films: The Expendables (2010), Hot Tub Time Machine (2010), How to Train Your Dragon (2010), Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), Kick-Ass (2010), Inception (2010)

While these films don't necessarily represent the "Top 7" of 2010, they are all qualified to set your new year off on the right foot. Each represents a few fun hours of escapism that should be good enough to melt the winter blues (or cure the New Year's Eve hangover). All of them are available on DVD/Blu-Ray as well, so you don't even have to leave the comfort of your own sofa and leopard-print Snuggie®!

Sunday Jan 2, 2011: The Expendables [R] (2010)
There's no better way to cure your NYE hangover than with concussive explosions and memories of movies past! Stallone's ultimate action movie throwback should be just what the doctor ordered to start 2011 off right.

Monday Jan 3, 2011: Hot Tub Time Machine [R] (2010)
It's probably your first full day of work since the holidays. If that's the case, NOTHING will feel better and help you get over cubicle lag better than some laughs. And this movie has those in spades! Easily one of the funniest films that came out last year (or in the last 10), Hot Tub Time Machine will definitely help move your week along speedily.

Tuesday Jan 4, 2011:
How to Train Your Dragon [PG] (2010)
This animated film from Dreamworks could easily have phoned it in and gone just for cheap laughs like so many of its predecessors, but it didn't. With enough heart, discovery, action and humor for anyone in the family; this film will make for a perfect "pizza and a movie night". Oooh Tuesday pizza and a movie night! I smell a new tradition!

Wednesday Jan 5, 2011:
Exit Through the Gift Shop [R] (2010)
With all the "is it real or not?" hype surrounding this debut film from street artist Banksy, people seem to be missing what's right in front of their eyes. A great film. It plays more like a comedy narrative than a documentary about street artists and their notoriety. A short, perfect little film to help get you through your humpday.

Thursday Jan 6, 2011:
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World [PG-13] (2010)
An exhilarating, genre-bending epic of epic epicness. People seem to be afraid to check this movie out. Whether you're suffering from Michael Cera fatigue, or just couldn't make out what was actually happening during the trailer; just trust me and watch this movie. You don't HAVE to get every inside joke for gamers; you don't HAVE to be familiar with the comic series; you don't even HAVE to be Canadian to "get" this movie. So watch it already! And you're welcome.

Friday Jan 7, 2011:
Kick-Ass [R] (2010)
Take a comic dying to be treated right and used as half epic-comic-book-movie and half parody-of-epic-comic-book-movies; add a young director who'll do just about anything to get this film made (including some early financing) and a fresh young cast of future superstars; mix well and sprinkle in a dose of Nicolas Cage being AWESOME. That's the recipe for Kick-Ass; a film that not only lives up to its name, but manages to instill a little originality and gravitas to a summer popcorn action flick. A great way to start the first official weekend of 2011.

Saturday Jan 8, 2011:
Inception [PG-13] (2010)
Okay, so I know this week's movies have all been a little action-heavy. Well let's compromise by ending on Inception. Another genre-bender that has its own built-in action movie in its third act. Christopher Nolan gives us one of the best film endings in a long time. One that will leave you with a different impression after each viewing, so let's see what we believe with the first viewing of 2011...
